I'm baaack! Now with more beater...

It's been about 5 years since I've made a post here, but I'm happy to say that I'm back. I've been daily driving my '06 Aero 5MT ever since, but have busy with other things, and haven't had much time to do car related things besides basic maintenance. It's good to see that there are a handful of original members left, though it looks like a lot have moved on to "bigger" things.
I recently got a job that involves a lot of driving, so I decided to keep an eye out for a cheaper car to keep the miles off the Aero (just hit 100k the other day  eek  sadbanana). I was originally looking for an Acura RSX, because I wanted something reliable, fuel efficient, and relatively compact. Though I found quite a few in my price range, finding one that wasn't molested or beat up proved to be a bit more difficult. Luckily, I held out on buying one, because I came across this gem on Craigslist this week. It was on sale 3 mins away from my house, and if any of you are in NC, you know how surprising that is. I've only seen 3 other 9-2x's ever in NC, so finding one in my neighborhood was pretty exciting. These things just don't exist down here.

Managed to snag this '05 Linear 5MT for $2,000, which is half of what I was trying to spend! Though the body is a little rough, it has a remanufactured motor that only has 67k miles on it, and it runs like a dream. The original motor went down when the timing belt snapped, and the previous owner had 50+ maintenance records since the motor replacement. I seriously could not have asked for a more mechanically sound car for $2k.

The downside with this car is that the interior is filthy. yikes  The previous owner did a lot of outdoor activities, and had 2 large dogs. I've never seen so much dog hair embedded in a car interior before, so needless to say it needs an extreme deep clean. My goal is to get a good bit of that done over this holiday weekend. The dog hair is truly weaved in with the carpet, so if any of you have tips on how to get it out, let me know!

Here are some crappy pics I took immediately after I brought it home. Don't mind the extremely dirty Aero next to it...we've had a lot of rain recently, and I haven't gotten a chance to wash her in a while.

Re: I'm baaack! Now with more beater...

Since this will be my commuter, its going to stay relatively stock. I'll post updates in this thread as I make progress, but initial plans with the Linear are:

- Deep clean the interior
- Wet sand the headlights
- Replace shift linkage with the Turn In Concepts shift linkage update (The current linkage is shot. I can move the shifter to the 5th gear position even when engaged in 1st.)
- Leather LGT shift knob (My Aero has this, and after using it for the past 9 years, the stock rubber shift knob just feels wrong.)
- Replacement OEM floormats (It currently has ill-fitting universal mats.)
- WRX Aluminum pedals (The rubber pads are completely worn away...clutch pedal is bare metal, so it could use an update.)
- OEM 16' Subaru wheels (I've always hated the look of the Linear wheels, so I'd ideally like to find some 16x7 RS wheels. If I can't find any, I'll settle for the 02-03 WRX stockers.)
- Window tint

Aw c'mon guys, they're not so bad! This is with just one quick go with Tuff Stuff. They're still damp in this pic, so they should brighten up a bit more when dry. I'm gonna do another pass or 2 with Tuff Stuff tomorrow, so hopefully they'll look even better. driving

Chet!  You're back!

The seats are looking much better.  When I had my Linear I switched the seats out with Bugeye seats that I picked up for $80 bucks.  My brother changed the interior of his 2007 WRX out for STI seats.  If it never gets clean enough for your liking you got options.  Also, wooden beads  star

Great beater.

She may be a beater, but she still deserves to see!

Wet sanded, Headlight Armor applied, headlight bulbs upgraded, and LED parking lights from superbrightleds.com added. Next up are some interior updates.

Its funny you say that, there seems to be Bugeye interior for sale everywhere around here right now. There are at least 3 sets for sale within 30 mins of me. Problem is that I don't want to lose my heated seats, so these will have to do.

Re: I'm baaack! Now with more beater...

Well today was going to be a good day, but hit a minor setback.

I received my new Saab center caps in the mail (bought 2 sets, because who knows when I'll see another set again), and also picked up a set of super clean WRX wheels for $100 locally.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y179/chet90si/IMG_3481_zpseuv1hj1p.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y179/chet90si/IMG_3483_zpsjrlac2di.jpg

They were supposed to be an upgrade over my embarrassingly beat-up Linear wheels:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y179/chet90si/IMG_3489_zpsm1qtdeln.jpg

Buuut, I'm not at all happy with the way they fit:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y179/chet90si/IMG_3484_zps4ms8fyvi.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y179/chet90si/IMG_3485_zpsldqjkvbz.jpg

I read on here in another thread that the Saab center caps fit the WRX wheels perfectly, but that does not seem to be the case. I mean, they fit in the sense that the won't fall out...but they don't fit flush, and they look wildly out of place IMO. For now, its back to the drawing board. I'm thinking about throwing the WRX wheels on there with the Subaru center caps temporarily, and then repainting the stockers in metallic bronze.. I think they'll look nice with fresh center caps. Anyone ever painted their Linear wheels bronze?

Also, does that mean that the only wheels that the Saab center caps fit well in are the 16' Linear, 16' Aero, and 17' Sport package wheels? Does anybody know of other Subaru OEM wheels that these center caps will fit in a little better?

Splain your headlight wet sanding process a bit more.  My Honda needs this badly.

Headlights look good, now put these on to keep them from oxidizing. I am on my second set of them and have never had to buff up the covers.

Like I said in my post, Headlight Armor has already been added. Same thing. And I agree, I will never go without some sort of vinyl protection on these headlights again. Added them to both of my 9-2x's while I was at it...well worth the money.

Splain your headlight wet sanding process a bit more.  My Honda needs this badly.

A spray bottle filled with water, a rubber sanding block, 1000/1500/3000 grit sandpaper, and a lot of patience.

After the sanding, I hit them with some plastic polish. I think I used Mother's this time around, but any polish should do. I usually apply wax for the final step, but since I was applying Headlight Armor, I skipped it this time around.

Re: I'm baaack! Now with more beater...

Put the WRX wheels on today. For $100 wheels, I think these look pretty good. Still planning on painting the stockers bronze eventually.

Also installed my TurnIn Concepts 5MT Linkage Update (http://turninconcepts.com/tic-5mt-linkage-update.html). If any of you '05 folks have a sloppy shifter, I could not recommend this enough. The beater's shifter feels better than my Aero's now.

I did actually, in all areas of the car except the trunk. There is no hope for the carpet in the trunk, the hair has become part of it. For the rest of the cabin, however, it is 100% dog hair free now. The secret is latex kitchen gloves. Just keep stroking the carpet, and the hair will just pull right out and pile up. I used the exact gloves linked here: https://www.amazon.com/Playtex-Gloves-L … 321_6?th=1

I purchased the center caps from here: http://www.thesaabsite.com/catalog/saab-9-2x/?year=2006&bs=5D&engine[]=255   I actually bought all of their remaining stock when I bought them, but it looks like they've restocked...they have 38 of them now.

Re: I'm baaack! Now with more beater...

I finally got the interior all cleaned up. Additions include:

     - Legacy GT shift knob
     - STI floormats
     - WRX aluminum pedals
     - leather steering wheel from an Outback
     - replaced the floormat hook as described here: http://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=77801

All parts were new with the exception of the steering wheel. Its amazing how roughly $250 worth of parts (and some elbow grease) so drastically changed the look and feel of the interior of this car. Here are the before and after shots:

Its been a while since I posted an update, but the beater has been my daily driver for almost a year now. I've put over 8,000 miles on her, and she hasn't missed a beat. I also finally managed to find some 2.5RS six-spokes, and figured I'd share a pic from a drive I took this weekend.  driving
