Considering a 2005 Linear...

Hi All,

While looking for a 2004-05 subaru impreza I stumbled on an ad for a 2005 Linear with 90,000 kms, auto.  I'd never heard of the 9-2x before but fell for it pretty hard once I checked it out.

I popped into local Subaru dealership to ask about servicing it etc, and they said that they won't touch them.  The only Saab dealer near where I live is about an hour away.

I talked to a guy at a local independent mechanic who wrenches primarily on Subarus, and his advice was stay away because parts will be a huge pain in the ass to get.  Is this the case?

I live in Vancouver, BC, btw.

Thanks for any input, I really like the car but am hesitant to pull the trigger if it's gonna be a hassle/$$$ keeping it on the road.

And yes, I wish it was an aero or at least a 5spd but it's the only one in my area...

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

Parts are NOT a pain in the ass.  At least mechanical ones.  They even have the same part number as a Subaru.  I'm surprised your local independent was unaware.  the only issue you would have with parts would be body panels if you were to get into an accident....that's it.

Anyway, if he can fix a subaru he can fix that.  maybe he's never seen one.  The last place I would take the car to would be a Saab or GM dealer.

Buy and take it to him and open up his world.  90km isn't bad either.  You know if it's been well taken care of so far?

For all intensive purposes the car is a Subaru imprezza

checkout these parts..no difference.  buy everything from subaru exactly as you would an impreza:

Here's what's actually different:

and now i can see why your mechanic had never heard of them:

something like only 1000 in Canada...rare..

enjoy

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

agree with tlow98, but that list has some things on it that were Aero specific... like the STI steering rack.

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

I recently picked up an 06 Linear (2.5i) with a few months left on the factory warranty for about 3k less than the equivalent Impreza.  I had a few issues with the drivers side window and O2 sensors so I took it to my local Saab dealer but they had to take it to Subaru as they didnt know how to fix it! I would suggest calling a few Subaru dealers in your area, some may work on the Saabaru and some may not.

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

Wow thanks everyone for the quick feedback...

About the car in question:

Interior is close to showroom condition.  Drivers side unfortunately got keyed at some point but it's not that bad (can this be buffed out?), a few other knicks here and there but otherwise body is in good shape, no accidents.

Brand new tires (Nokian WRG2).

He hasn't done 96k kms service (coolant, plugs, etc).

Asking $11,000.  Keep in mind a subaru impreza rs with similar mileage runs around $10-12k up here.

What do you guys think?

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

does the key job go thru the paint and primer?  If you can see bare metal it will need to be fixed prior to winter.  In order to be "buffed out" it would need to be clearcoat damage only.  got a pic? how many panels does the key job encompass?

The 60k mi/96k service is 400-500 US $ at most independent shops.  not a deal breaker, IMO.

Sounds like a decent value and representative of the age/mileage.  The Saab is a cut above the Subaru in terms of noise/vibration/harshness. A much quieter car overall.  What packages does it have?

cold weather? (heated seats, windshield, mirros)
sport? (17" rims)
sunroof?
premium? (automatic air, leather)

If none, see if he'll take 10.  in my book the saab is worth more than a comparitively optioned subaru, but depreciation typically makes them sell for less....win, win

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

I didn't look that closely at the key job, to be honest I didn't even notice it until the owner pointed it out.  Granted it was at night and pretty dark when I looked at it....will probably have to do another once over before making a final decision.

Looks like base trim w/sunroof.

I'll post here if a deal happens

Thanks all for the help  embeer !

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

I would try to go lower than $11k (also a canuck).  I paid $12500 (plus all taxes etc...) for mine last year with same mileage.  Just think you should be aiming for more like 10k.

I got in an accident a few months ago and needed new body panels.  Don't know where the nearest saab dealer is, but either way, it was fixed up like new quick and easy.  Same might not be true in 5 years, I don't know, but as of now body parts aren't an issue.

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

Im from Calgary and I picked up my 06 Linear (manual, 70k) for $13k a few months back. It also has a sunroof & cold weather package (heated seats etc). I would say that the price is reasonable but you should be able to talk them down a little bit.

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

$11 for a Linear is reasonable?  Man, cars must run expensive up there in west Canada.

Re: Considering a 2005 Linear...

Everything is more expensive this side of the border my friend.  Although in my experience, I find most vehicle in pacific northwest to be pretty similarily priced (on either side of the border).  Since the $CAD has been hovering around par I've always looked south for a deal but have never been able to justify buying down there.
