No oil on my dipstick

I've had a problem getting good readings from my dip stick for awhile now. This is one of the reasons I religiously change my oil every 3k. My car has been sitting quite a bit lately, and I've got 300 miles on it since my last oil change back in early April. Getting ready for a road trip this weekend, I checked my oil last night, and the stick was bone dry. I mean nothing.  Checking this morning after sitting over night; I pulled it out to clean it before checking it, and there was oil on it. I put it back in, took it out, and again it was dry. I let the car run for about 10 minutes, checked, still dry. Just to be sure, I drained my oil to replace and basically about 5 quarts dumped out. Refilled, checked, and it's f'n dry still.

I know we have really shitty dip sticks. However, is this anything I should be concerned about? Kind of sucks I can't even use my dip stick now.

Re: No oil on my dipstick

The dip stick sucks. Most worthless one I've ever had the displeasure of using...

Park car on dead-nuts level surface. Wait 4 hours for oil to cool and drain to sump. Check it then.

If you're changing your oil every 3k (and not using Mobil1), and you don't see blue clouds everywhere you drive, you should be fine. Just check it every third fill-up, if you see any oil on the stick, you're OK.

Re: No oil on my dipstick

It's always given shitty readings, I've just never seen it with literally no oil on it. There's not a trace of an oil leak anywhere under the car, and I really don't think it's burning oil. The thing not having ANY oil on it kind of worried me though. I figured I was being overly cautious refilling it, but $20 is a small price to pay for piece of mind I guess.

And no, no Mobile 1 in this car with all the horror stories on here and Nasioc. I've been using German Syntec, but just recently switched to Rotella T6 on the last oil change. That was another reason I was worried, since I really haven't seen how that oil behaves in this car.

Yearp. But beware that even parking on a level surface usually only yields a reading on one side of the dip stick.

Re: No oil on my dipstick

I usually give mine a little twist while it's in to yield a double sided result.

Seems to help

Re: No oil on my dipstick

In addition to all of the above, I also "stab" down any air bubble that may be in the dipstick tube and leave the dipstick out for a minute or two to let the oil run down to get a clearer reading.

Re: No oil on my dipstick

I got water-based oil in my dipstick filler tube last night.  It made the oil change process painful.  banghead

What's that?  On my ride they are not the same entity.  Also, water-based oil seems like an oxymoron.  ihaz cun phusion

That's supposed to make it less painful, I think you may be doing it wrong, iamchris.

No!  Applying lube.  Got in peehole.  Pain.

It's never happened before.  Am I alone?

Re: No oil on my dipstick

Painful enough to induce vomiting due to nausea from the pain?  Were you using Mobil1?
