LeMONS: The Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500 (Infineon, 10/22-23/2011)

Damn.  The full title of the event won't even fit in the subject line:

The Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500, Sponsored by Cruskin-Skankaway Inc., the Official Fungicidal Toe Creme of LeMons

My friends and I are getting ramped up for this one.  Of course, we still don't have a running car, but why would we let a little thing like that stop us?  It's a LeMONS race.

Is anyone else planning on attending, or even better (for a rather liberal interpretation of "better") participating?

My brother and I just picked up a beater we'll be working on for next year.  We're still one teammate short though.

Once you've got a car, finding drivers gets easier.  The only hurdle is the safety gear required of the driver.

What region are you in?

I'll be there driving the killer zombee MGB again.  IIRC, you had a Saab, or am I imagining that? Any pics of it? It'd be cool to meet up and have a beer while there.

Re: LeMONS: The Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500 (Infineon, 10/22-23/2011)

Spent most of today working on it.  The last race ended in what I originally diagnosed as a blown head gasket.  It turns out that there was a pretty major crack in the head. Cracks around the #2 or 3 exhaust valve seat were not uncommon with that vintage.

I'll see what pics I've got.  We've been using the "Team BIL" facebook page to track our (mis)fortunes.  Check that out.

And sure, we can meet up at the races.  I'm just as sure to recognize you from your avatar as you are from mine.

PM me.

Well actually finding a driver has been difficult because of the cost associated with getting the car track ready.  That and personal shit like gear.  Plus we need some people who actually know a few things about cars, not just some dude with money who wants to race.  Anyways, we got 4 now, so we'll start, but would be good to add another person and cut costs further.

We're in NJ.

Winning at Lemons... Like a boss.

We started from scratch with a $200 non-running Jetta having never raced in lemons before April. Ended up competing in three races this year and got 2 trophies at the first race, finishing 14th at the second, and winning our class at last weekend's race.

Re: LeMONS: The Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500 (Infineon, 10/22-23/2011)

Excellent results!

We've run one event so far.  At Sears Pointless (Infineon is notoriously treacherous in the wet) I started out, and had us up to, I think, 29th overall out of 186 starters.  We were 34th at the end of the second hour, and I'd come in ten or fifteen minutes before that hour ended.  When it dried out, the penalties started, followed by mechanical misfortune.

We ended day one with a crash, but it was the last lap of the day.  The cracked cylinder head ended day two halfway through.

The car's got power, so if we can hold it together and avoid penalties, I think we'll get a decent result.  Seeing the checkered from the track would be pretty decent, all things considered.

Re: LeMONS: The Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500 (Infineon, 10/22-23/2011)

The head is on, but we still need to get (the rest of) our shit together.  We've upgraded our intercooler with an eBay unit that should flow much better.  The old one was fine in its day, but its day is long gone.  The new one is the same size (l x w) but thicker, and crossflow, rather than doubling back.  The oil cooler was smashed, and we still need to deal with that.

I'm sure there are many little bits I've forgotten, but I'm hopeful.  We've got a day and a half before technical inspection.  A luxury of time.

arrow-up Thanks!

I'd like us to see the checkered flag from the track.  That'd be an improvement over last time.  The cracked head was too much to fix at the track, so we saw the finish from the stands.

I'll see you there!  I'm praying for no major issues to come up...we had a few electrical bugs along the way, but we only lost an hour or so of track time as a result.  Will your linear be there?  I'll be getting there in my blue 92x, and will be parked with this car:

Re: LeMONS: The Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500 (Infineon, 10/22-23/2011)

We were out for probably three hours on Saturday:  electrical, then a leaky radiator fitting, then a misfire.  The crash was literally one turn before the checkered flag, so no lost time that day.  We started over an hour late Sunday, and were done with probably more than three hours remaining on Sunday.  In retrospect, the cracked head was probably manifesting as the misfire we saw Saturday.

I may have the Linear with me.  We're still ironing out the transportation situation.  Oh, and we need to finish the car.

Re: LeMONS: The Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500 (Infineon, 10/22-23/2011)

Well, we didn't make it.  The Fail Train reached the station and we climbed aboard.

We got the car running, but it can't run long.  For those versed in Saab history:  it's a B-engine and the water pump has seized.

If you don't know what that means, I'll 'splain.

The water pump is mechanically driven through an auxilliary shaft.  That shaft runs longitudinally, and the water pump shaft vertically.  The shafts are both rather brittle.  Chances are that the teeth on both gears are well and truly fucked.  To replace the water pump requies special tools.  I still have those from my past life with an independent Saab shop.  The shft replacement requires engine removal.  And a replacement shaft.  They've been unavailable for probably 20 years.

So, we're back to the "well and truly fucked" part.

In any case, we missed technical inspection for the event, so we're not running.

On the plus side, I'm drinking.

Yeah.  It's been that kind of week.

That sucks you guys didn't make it....are you going to come spectate, or just relax at home?  Multiple people made the observation that the pits looked more empty than expected. I heard someone say that evil genius john had said there were 175 cars registered, and if things looked emptier than expected, you might not be alone in your situation.

Not sure yet.  I woke up at about 3am with headache and fever, so if I do it won't be today.

Last time at Infineon, there were 200+ entries, according to all the rumors and reports I heard, and 186 started.  They wanted to reduce the number a little because they'd realized they'd overcrowded the track.  It seemed like most of the laps I ran were parade laps, completely under caution.  I think it was a little better in the dry (I seem to be the designated "wet" driver), and this weekend should be outstanding weather.  It's sure gorgeous here.

Good luck!

That's a *little* more manageable than 186.  I led off last time, and I passed start/finish three times before all the cars had actually entered the track.

They may not even know, but still, if they did, that's well within LeMONS expectations.

EDIT:  I hope the organizers think up a suitable punishment.  Poetic justice FTW.
