'05 Aero Auto Tranny Question

Howdy,

I'm looking at the following car:

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.js … f=national

It's an '05 Aero, auto, 50K, $13K

I haven't driven the car yet, but I'm curious what the overall consensus is for the automatic transmission.  (I've almost exclusively driven manual cars.)  How is the reliability of the auto?  Is there noticeable turbo lag?

Do you think that this is a fair price?

Thanks!

Re: '05 Aero Auto Tranny Question

The 4EAT is absolutely horrendous.  If you're used to manual, don't do it.  The auto makes the boost threshold even higher than it would be with a 5MT.  This is pretty much the consensus across the forum.

Re: '05 Aero Auto Tranny Question

Auto is very reliable.
Lag is tremeandous.
If you're used to manuals, bypass it. It's not bad, but it's not fun.

Test drive it, there is 0 power till 3k rpm and even then the damn thing shifts twice to get into 3rd gear before it stays and goes to 4500rpm before it'd go into 4th unless it's WOT.

It's evil and I daily my miata over my aero every.damn.day because of it.

2005 Saab 9-2x Aero 4EAT <3 I loves it.  1 of 1,353 same models built in 05' super duper rare. Only 17.26% of 05' Production.
Dislikes: Saab logo vanishing, paint cheap.

There is no boost at the RPMs you drive at, regardless of transmission choice. biggrin

Follow-up:  I drove it and y'all were totally correct about the lag.  It's not intolerable, but I still enough to make me pass on an otherwise very nice car.  sad

Stage 2 fixes the lag quite nicely.

But then you have to invest in the Aggie special to handle that extra power.  star

Re: '05 Aero Auto Tranny Question

I have the 4EAT in my Aero and I agree with the other guys here. The auto tranny is not that great. Like you said, it's not intolerable but would surely have loved it in 5MT. At the same time if you go stage 2 as nstelemark mentions then you have something based on what others here say. Looking forward to upgrading mine to Stage 1 then 2.

The only reason I bought the car was because the guy who I purchased it from sold it for about $3k below book value. Other than a few minor dumb things that I fixed it was a heck of a deal to pass.  big_smile

Re: '05 Aero Auto Tranny Question

Just bought an Aero 4EAT myself, one of my good friends is a 6-7 year subaru tech and says there is vary rarely ever a WRX auto that comes in with a tranny problem. Very reliable, but certainly not as much fun as a manual.

I'm not entirely sure I would agree with that.  There are a few threads around that discuss issues with the 4EAT.  I think there are more problems related to the 5MT because of the way they are driven.  Driving a manual transmission AWD car is not the same as driving a manual two wheel drive car.  Many first-time owners learn this the hard way (see: Rasta2x.)
