Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

Damn, I just realized that there was a temperature difference.

The 92x run was done early in the morning, outside temp was around 79 degrees.

The S4 run was done at noon, outside temp was 89 degrees.

Time to try again this weekend, but this time, either early in the morning, or in the evening.

FWIW, I have a hard time believing the Stage 1 9-2x is capable of an "easy launch" 5.8 to 60.  That's my only point.  The recent magazine article Krazycarguy posted stated a 5500 rpm clutch drop yielded 6.1 to 60.

Anyway, who cares...

The 5.8 sec. 0-60 (Stage 1) was done with a aggressive launch at around 5,500 rpm.  It was one of the few very good launches I've done where I chirped the tires at launch.

Car and Driver did 6.1 sec. 0-60 with a stock 92x Aero.

Thanks, now for the elephant int he closet.  How'd you launch your new hotness?

I launched the S4 at around 2,000 rpm.  According to the Audi Forums, 2,000 - 2,500 rpm is about right for a S4 launch.  Anything higher is risky.

I just found this Road and Track article on the S4 Avant.

Turns out that up to 0-40, I was pretty close to their times, but after that my times go down.

Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

According to this PDF, the stock wheels on the 2005 Audi S4 weigh only 5.8 lbs. each.

http://www.audiworld.com/news/05/losang … 4specs.pdf

That has to be an error.  There is no way 18x8 cast alloy wheels weigh only 5.8 lbs. each.

I tried www.wheelweights.net to verify this, but I can't get on their website for some reason.

Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

I thought that may have been in kg, but I highly doubt they are 13 lbs each either. FWIW, Audi (and most other German OE) hasn't had a truly light OEM wheel in over 15 yrs. TUV (wheel has to maintain bead seal integrity for some specified time after some spec impact at a spec Autobahn speed) regs make light wheels all but cost prohibited for all but the most high profit margin models. I'd be shocked if your factory 18's come in at less than 24 lbs. BUT you'll have enough air in your tire to bring it to a safe stop after a hard wheel impact from Autobahn speeds. Can't say that for some highly regarded non-TUV wheels (SSR Comps come to mind).

Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

I can almost guarantee it's a typo, and they didn't put a "2" in front of the "_5.8".  VW GTI wheels of a similar vintage and size were in the 26-29lb range iirc, depending on which wheel option the car came with. Audi S4 reps for your car always seem to weigh about that, too.

Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

CORRECTION!!!  My Stage 1 92x is ONLY slightly FASTER than the S4.

Turns out the straightaway is Not Perfectly level.  The S4 run was on a very slight incline.  And the previous 92x was done in the opposite direction, so it was on a slight decline.  So I did the 92x run again, this time in the exact same conditions as the S4.

As expected the 92x results was slower, and the lead changes back and forth, but only after 100 mph, the S4 starts to slowly pull away.

The car *could* be faster if he wanted to drive it like he stole it (and didn't have to pay for resulting wear). Instead these times reflect some pretty conservative driving.  He could easily shave at least 2 tenths off his 60 ft times, which would result in a quarter mile time that's 2-5 tenths quicker than these times. I can cut 2.1 60s on street tires with fwd, so there's no reason he shouldn't be able to get at least a 2.0 (instead of 2.2x) without being too abusive, but since he's not looking to turn his rare Audi into the world's most expensive drag racer, I wouldn't necessarily recommend too many hard launches from a dig.

If I bought a V8 Audi I would be livid if I couldn't eat four bangers with some simple exhaust modifications.

Haha, so true. Fortunately, you'd actually enjoy being inside the slow-tannic.  Audi's own quite conservative 0-60 times on this gen sedan S4 are just so much faster and that's what confuses me. Ahhh well, still a cool muscle wagon.

Oh, I love the S4 wagon. But, you would think something that is too fat to turn well would at least be an absolute rocket in the straights.

So far I've made only 2 runs with the S4.  I'm sure it will improve as I get used to launching it properly.

I'm only slightly getting used to launching the 92x now, and that's only after over a dozen fairly hard launches.

And I guess the mileage might have something to do with it.  Both cars are 2005 models.  My 92x has just under 42K miles.  The S4 has around 78K miles.

Unlikely it's the mileage unless there's something wrong with the S4... Maf, O2, air filter clogged to shit, fuel injector, etc.

Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

Nothing from these times suggests the car's broken. Work on those 60fts, play around with shift points, speed up your shifts with greater familiarity with the car, etc. Also, keep in mind that magazines often get their times powershifting, so unless you are willing to do that, even a good driver in a healthy car might not be able to match their times. And, it definitely takes more than two passes to master your car.

Shit, don't worry about the haters. Even *if* the S4 is half a 10th slower in the quarter mile, we all know which car we'd prefer to be in while listening to classical music at 155 mph on our way to a fancy restaurant.  cool

I have to say, the stock Bose audio system is awesome in the S4.  Even the Bose system in my previous 1998.5 Audi A4 was really good too.  I've always loved the Audi audio systems.

Ain't that the truth.  In another thread, people were saying how new automatic Honda Accords (or Toyota Camrys, or whatever it was) could beat a 9-2x 0-60.  Just mash the pedal, and there you are.

I'm with you...I'd be pretty annoyed if I picked up a somewhat performance oriented car, and it required skillful driving in order to beat an econobox.

And speed808:  I in no way mean that as a dig on your car.  You made an awesome purchase....that thing looks amazing and the interior looks very posh.  Color me jealous.   up

Yeah, the NEW Camry SE V-6 makes anybody fast in a straight line.  Even my best 92x Stage 1 times cannot beat the New Camry SE V-6 times.  With the 92x, you have do a aggressive launch.  And like it was mentioned before, all you have to do is mash the pedal on the Camry and you're gone.

Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

The V-6 Camry has made 268 HP (nothing to sneeze at) for some time, on a roll, they can take a fair number of "sporty" cars. It's not just a launch thing (and actually, FWD and no LSD means a decent AWD launch will take a mash and go Camry driver everytime on the hole shot, just be prepared to watch them fly by later.).  Hell, a Camry gave my //S6 a hard time on the highway, although I refused to shift out of top gear and wasn't willing to risk a ticket in what I knew to be a heavily patrolled zone (I-287 near Suffern, NY) and I knew a downshift and stomp would result in a "pull your ticket" 120 in an very, very short time with no way off of the Highway.

Re: Picking up the S4 Avant tomorrow

Drove the S4 this past weekend.  Even though the acceleration numbers are similar to my 92x, the S4 is a lot easier to get a good launch.

With the S4, I can get about 8 out of 10 good launches.  Just rev it to 2,000 rpm and go.  No turbo lag to worry about.

With the 92x, I'll be lucky to get 1 out of 10.  Gotta rev it to 5,000 - 5,500 rpm and hope you don't bog or smoke the clutch.

I was at a stoplight and a older Camry pulled alongside.  He wanted to take me off the line and get in front of me to get on the freeway.  I just brought up the revs to 2,000 rpm and did a quick clutch release and the S4 just took off.  Left that Camry in the dust.  But if it were the newer 2012 V-6 Camry, it would have been a lot closer.

I'm loving the V8 power right now.  Who cares if I get only around 8-9 mpg with spirited driving, it's only a weekend car.
