Gas Gauge Accuracy

I just picked up a 2005 Aero not long ago, and on the way home I filled up because the gauge was at reading 1/8 tank (or even less). I thought it was odd though that it took under 10 gallons to fill it up (closer to 9 actually). Now I'm only about 170 or so miles into my full tank, and the gas gauge is reading right at 1/4.

Is it characteristic of these gas gauges to read less volume on the first half of the tank than the second? Just curious...

Re: Gas Gauge Accuracy

The last half seems to go quicker on my car. You can run it till the light comes on and it will take about 11 gallons to fill it up at that point. Im not getting into theoretical gas math with your question....so I probably didn't answer you correctly

Im happy to get 300-320 miles on a tank in mixed driving conditions, but that's pushing it

Re: Gas Gauge Accuracy

I just mentioned this to my co-worker today.  I filled up this morning from 1/4 tank to full and it only took 9.2 gallons.

Re: Gas Gauge Accuracy

I usually fill up at 1/4th to 1/8th or so and it takes 10-12 gallons.  The one hting I will say is that when the "Low fuel" light comes on it means "Get to a Gas station NOW!", as opposed to my 99 Impreza where it meant "You should probably think about filling the tank soon"

I've noticed the same thing.  My gas gauge will say F for a long while, probably 50-70 miles.  Then it begins to drop, and once it hits 1/2, it drops more rapidly.

Re: Gas Gauge Accuracy

OP and the other guy who mentioned it.  You're getting short-filled.  Common issue among subarus, in my experience.  Something about the filler tube and angles and the flow from the fuel nozzle makes the auto-shut off trigger early.  You get much more reliable tank fills and mileage readings if you run the pump on the lowest setting.

we also have V-shaped tanks, and a float runs the gas gauge.  So no, your gauge is not that reliable - your fill ups and trip-odometer are a much better indicator for fill ups.

Yes, because he drives a 97 impreza :V

also, I fill up on the lowest auto-fill setting on the pump, but my gauge does say full.  I don't want to overfill at a pump sad

This is true. When I first got the car, I thought I was fine when it turned on because my other cars gave me more heads up. 20 miles later, the car was sputtering from lack of fuel and I barely made it off the interstate to the gas station.

Re: Gas Gauge Accuracy

For you guys who say you don't get enough warning with the yellow light - has your car gotten the fuel system recall work done?

Re: Gas Gauge Accuracy

I've found that the middle two quarter tanks go by really fast, and the top quarter + over full and the bottom quarter + reserve last a long time.  I've driven about 35 miles with the light on (carefully) and filled 57/60 litres.  I get 35-70 miles from the part above full, depending on the driving.  I slow down the fuel flow when filling up.

If our tanks are V-shaped, I'm guessing there's an equalizer tube connecting the tops so the left side fills?  And that this tube is a small diameter and by filling too fast you don't allow enough time for the air to pass over to the filler tube side?

Re: Gas Gauge Accuracy

When topped up I get ~100 miles out of the first "1/4" tank, another 100 out of the rest of the half, and just over 100 out of the second half of the tank. Those measurements are according to the guage.
As for the dummy light, I've gone over 30 miles with the light on without any issues. I wouldn't push it past that.
