Just picked up an Aero.

I just picked up a 05 AUTOMATIC AERO for my girl.  Seems to have been taken care of pretty well.  Car has just under 50k miles on it.  I'd like to know which oil you guys suggest for the engine, tranny and diff.  I personally like running 10W30 Royal Purple in my 2.5 00 Impreza RS engine.  It’s a little expensive but when you think about it.  You can blow $40+ on just a tank of gas these days.  I run Redline in the tranny and diff of that as well.  I live in Orlando so if that makes a difference.  It's pretty warm here year round.  Any other things I should look at changing around 50k miles or coming up?  Also...the passenger side mirror doesn't work.  Easy fix how?  I'd like to pick up some good fitting rubber or plastic floor mats if you has any suggestions on those.  Alright....thanks guys.

Re: Just picked up an Aero.

I personally have run Royal Purple in my 03 WRX wagon with horrible results.  It used a quart every 1200 miles and would always blow blue smoke out the exhaust.  I thought my motor was just on its way out. Had the oil analyzed and was informed the oil sheered down very quick and to switch to another oil. I switched to The Synthetic Rotella T6 5w40 which a majority of the Subaru crowd uses and it burns about a half quart every 5,000.  Had it analyzed at 5,000 miles and was informed I can get away with a few thousand more.   My car has 185k miles on  it.

For the record, my third cylinder went while I was using RP. I think my motor was pretty beat from the previous owner though.

The last one I had was 841/2000 (Summit White) and bone stock and clean.  I actually sold it about 6 months ago before I moved down to ORL from OHIO.  I only owned it a few months.  I kind of regret selling it but it was either that or my 00 RS.  I'm not sure about the other 2 I owned # wise.

Re: Just picked up an Aero.

My local subbie mechanic pulled out some sheet showing an independent study researching the quality of oils.

RP was poor.

AmsOil, Kendal and one other one was really high up there.

Quality oils allow you to change your oil LESS often. The only way to tell if your oil is still good is to mail it to a oil testing laboratory.
I've seen some people run they're high quality oil to 25,000 kilometers until it was no longer lubricating well (according to the test results).
In contrast, some people only could drive 4,000km before it was completely useless. Depends on way to many factors, mainly how the car is driven.

Buy a good quality oil and change it often is what im trying to say. Shouldn't be beating a automatic tranny anyways (overheat)
