Hey guys - a friend of mine bought a 99 Forester with a 2.5 block from a shady motherfucker in Ohio. Everything seemed to check out fine, and he drove it home...got 100 miles away and the transmission shits out. Shop he had to towed to (not a subaru-specific shop) also claims he has an engine knock - we both doubt that. The guy he bought it from won't do shit, and I suspect that he knew it was a POS when he sold it...
Anyway, his other car was totaled when someone lost control of their car on a curve and smashed into my buddy's parked car. He's got an insurance check, and is thinking of just fixing up the Forester, then taking the remainder to pay a lawyer to fuck the guy up.
Where's the best place for him to find an engine and/or transmission? It's a 4eat. Used preferred, for cost. Taking legit suggestions...and he lives in Kentucky if that matters at all.

Fixed it for you.

Really? Aren't used cars sold in as-is condition?
IMO, it was your buddy's responsibility to have the car checked out before he bought it. It's his own fault.

Chris now has absorbed enough of your power to metabolize his nutrients. He grows stronger everyday.

ass.
Private sale. he checked it over the best he could - and it ran/drove beautifully.
That's not the fucking discussion, though. I just want to know if you guys who know how to change your own oil have any engine or transmission referrals.

Fuck! The fucking fuckers fucked!

Hate to say it but I think iamchris is right. It's gonna be really difficult to prove that the seller purposely deceived your friend and hold him liable. Probably more trouble than it's worth. It definitely sucks to hear that you have no recourse and should just take the punch and move on, but sometimes that's the best option. Don't waste your time and money on a lawyer trying to punish this guy. Forget about him. It's really unlikely you'll get anywhere.
What does it say on the bill of sale? Usually people write something like "the seller makes no guarantees about the condition of the vehicle and is selling the vehicle 'as is.'" You take a risk buying from an individual to get the advantage of a lower price usually. Dealers are more expensive, but will be around to back up their sale if something like this happens. Once you sign on the bottom line and money has changed hands with an individual, the car is yours to deal with.

Yeah, and how did that work out for him? That's why you hire a mechanic to let wiser eyes examine it.

Yes it is! You brought it up!

Guess I can't comment! Next time your buddy wants to buy a car, let me know and I can do a pre-purchase inspection for him. Couldn't be any worse than his own! I'll even throw in a free oil change!
You know you love me.

Oh no! He's out of control! He will not let any justifiably negative response go unanswered! You've no idea what you have unleashed, Bryan! He needs your power! HEEEE NEEEEDS YOOOUUUR POOOOOOOOOOWER.
Ahhhhh! AHHHHHHH!

Just quit while you are ahead. You ever wonder what breeds interference from third parties who have no vested interest in the thread? You made your fucking point, now score your hash mark and take a walk, dude. The guy just wants friendly assistance, not a fucking repeat flogging on your dead goddamn horse.
