I need turbo recommendations......I drank the Kool Aid

The story so far..........I've had the car for about a year, currently 44000 miles on it, 5000 miles on Stage 1. Whiteline F/R sways on with Kartboy links with Stop Tech brakes, ss lines, Epic springs going on this weekend. I have a Cobb catted dp, Prodrive axleback, Sti uppipe. The problem is that I've driven a couple of stage 2 cars and though they are a huge improvement over the stock car, I still feel as though I won't be satisfied and will want a bit more. The "a bit more" for me is essentially my childish wish to match the acceleration of my brother's 335is (stock) So I thought the wise thing would be to bypass stage 2 and just do a turbo/tmic/pump/injector upgrade and save on the cost of installation. So here is my dilema, I've done a bit of research and even though there are some better options, I'd like to stick with one of the IHI or the FP16g that I can flash using Cobb's AP. One reason is just to try and keep things simple, the other is because it will be at least August before I can get an appt with EFI to get a protune. So with that in mind, do you guys think I should purchase a new IHI ( I would have preferred an VF34 but they seem to be very scarce, remaining choices being VF 43 or 48. They also list a 39 I believe. Or should just look for a used VF34? I called up Forced Performance but the sales person I spoke to said they no longer make turbo (specified under the AP map) I would be quite happy (for now anyway) with around 275-285whp. I plan on getting a compression leak down test before doing anything.

Re: I need turbo recommendations......I drank the Kool Aid

I went through the same thing a little while ago, my old thread might help you.

http://saab92x.com/viewtopic.php?id=36159

A 16g is going to put any VF to shame. I'm glad I went with the VF34. It's a comfortable daily driver with plenty of power, and it doesn't put too much stress on the trans. The 16g wins in every performance category, and they can be rebuilt. But I like my turbo, a lot.. and it's kind of rare so bonus point.

Re: I need turbo recommendations......I drank the Kool Aid

I was pretty much set on the VF34 but the problem is sourcing a good used one. The only new ones are from Australia and with shipping it's pushing past $1400 bucks. I am not even sure where you find a 16g that's specific to the Cobb map. I will have a look at the link, thanks.

I am REALLY happy with my vf34.

However, if it ever dies, I'll be doing a fp16g next.

Re: I need turbo recommendations......I drank the Kool Aid

I did a vf43,,, pulls strong until around 6000rpm then runs out of steam. I would say skip the VF's and do a 16G turbo. I wonder what I am missing by not having a 16G. It kinda sucks to spend the money and still be left wondering,  facepalm

Re: I need turbo recommendations......I drank the Kool Aid

Do you guys have any idea where I can get a new 16g from? I've contacted Blouch and FP and they both said they no longer produce the standard td05 16g (510cfm) which is what's specified on the Cobb AP map. I am guessing I may have to go with the slightly larger one. I wanted to stay as simple as possible and stick to the standard 16g. At this point, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the VF34 or 16g, it's just a matter of sourcing one now. Also, if anyone knows if someone parting out with their STI TMIC, give me a heads up please. I am checking Nasioc also.

Surf nasioc, plenty of turbos go through there. Are you set on buying news?

Re: I need turbo recommendations......I drank the Kool Aid

I've had a VF48 and 275whp for a few years now and I love it.  Extremely enjoyable powerband, however the VF seems to be laggy for its size.  I think a conservative tune on a 16G would be awesome, however two dumbasses in the Subaru community around me just threw a rod and blew third gear in their cars, both with ~300whp tunes on their 16g's.  But they were young idiots so I can't really say its all the extra power the 16g provides but rather the driver mod.

arrow-up Maybe if you post up pics of your secret santa gifts, one of us will notice that there's a hidden compartment with a 16g in it.

I've read negative about those turbos from Dom the engine builder, very good explanations on why the hta68 are not very good flowing turbos. I was in a similar dilema, purchased a brand new Blouch 16g, is a very good choice for a quality built turbo.
Search for Blouch performance turbos.

What do you guys think of this?

If I get a good, low mileage used VF or 16g, I would be open to that, too.

Like hammyT, I run a vf48 on a conservative tune and have had no issues. It's ported and polished and, to me, it spools quite quickly. Course if you ask the local members I drive like a Grandma and am never in boost anyway.  lol

Remember all the supporting mods (and their cost) when you are figuring for this little endeavor.

Also look at the 19T upgrade. Depending on the driving you do, that could be the perfect fit.

That is the turbo I suggested, always read good reviews on those turbos. Blouch turbos are rebuildable, they do their work in house.
A lightly used vf48 would be a great choice too.
The 19t option would give you great low and mid range power but still leaves you with the top end you have now.
Get a vf48 or a 16g, you'll be happy you did.

Just scourged the Scoobie forums and got a couple of active hits...

Maybe those will help.

so what's the difference between ^ that one, and this one:

http://www.oakos.com/Merchant2/merchant … _Code=3223

i see it's the xt and it lists the flow rate, but the flow rate for the first 16g isn't listed... does it just have a slightly larger compressor wheel?

The xt has a billet compressor wheel at 41lb/min vs the standard 16g at 35lb/min.

Re: I need turbo recommendations......I drank the Kool Aid

When I spoke to the person at Oakos, he said standard one flows at 510 CFM and the XT version flows at a much higher rate. The standard one is what the Cobb ots map is specified for, not the XT version.

So it looks like I am going with a low mileage (16,000) VF 30. Got a great deal on one from Boston Motorsports, and the chap also has the injectors, fuel pump, all for around $700.
