Welcome to Saab92x.com!
|
I've been doing some searching the forum regarding debadging but all the threads seem to be fairly old. I wanted to see if anyone has debadged their car recently and if there were any problems. I would like to remove the '92x' and 'Aero' from my newly purchased '05 but am wondering if since it's had 7 years of baking on the paint if it might have a different color underneath (non-faded paint) or if the adhesive will give me more problems?
There is a lot of information on how-to so if I do it I'll know how, but just wanted to hear if anyone has done it recently or have any recommendations for debadging a 7 year old car?
The other thing I'm looking into is tinting the turn signal section of the taillights red a la RLB's beast:
Is this done w/ red tint film or otherwise?

I say nay on tinting, but a good bake with some black paint in the back looks much, much better.

You didn't ask but de badging
and black tint tailights

@Homyality: Can you post a pic of what you're talking about? I half considered a light light tint on the tails to give it a somewhat charcoal look but all black I'm not interested in doing. Esp. w/ nothing else black to match it (rims)
@anaya661: I'm interested in debadging just cuz it gives it a really clean look and also a bit of 'what the hell is this?' factor as well.
I agree though, this

I'm only trying to make the turn signal section red

I totally mis read that and wanted to jump down your throat for wanting to black them out
red actually looks interesting and if anything would be the best looking thing if you're looking to mess with the oem look. Some people here in this town don't know what it is even with all the badging. "what's a
? "

think he means the 92x and aero (or 2.5i) badges.

debadging is kind of ftw. I'm thinking about doing it too, getting rid of the emblem and putting the saabaru tecnica one...it's cool when no one knows what you have

I removed some pinstripes that I had on my car. I could see were they had been mounted about 2 months but now they are gone.
My r in aero is on it's way to fall off.. But I want to keep it, so I want to ask how to fasten it instead of removing it?
btw I can't see any difference underneath the r and the rest of the paint. (But I still have the adhesive there.. so I cant see for sure.)

btw, ikbrown, did you find any of the old threads on the topic particularly useful?

Very funny... my "r" was recently dangling by a tiny bit of adhesive so I pulled it off and its in my car. I am having the same indecision. Let me know what you use. I bought some trim adhesive on a roll but it almost seems too thick....
Now I'm considering just taking off the 9-2x and Aero and painting them graphite-ish to match he grille... or leaving it debadged but I am nervous about discoloration like ikbrown said

They make red taillight overlays

@anaya661: Yeah I think the red tinted turn signal gives it a good one-off look for those who know and it looks stock but cool for those who don't know the car. I agree lots of people don't know the car, even w/ the 92x badges, I'm trying to go even more stealth! ha. So people only know it's a
@2JZ: That's exactly what I mean to take off.
@3001: The threads existing on the topic that I found were useful on how-to but not on if paint was faded or not because they were mostly older threads when paint fading wasn't an issue on the cars.
@Tribbe: You can probably find a 3M adhesive tape specifically for this or a similar application. I'm thinking if I take them off I can just measure where the logos are and if there is a different color paint and the problem isn't solved by a good cleaning/waxing & exposure to the sun then I'll be able to level a piece of tape on the rear and re-apply the badges. Generally the paint on my car seems to be in great shape so I don't think it should be a huge issue.
@Homyality: I'm talking about the taillights, not headlights. Koji mod is on my want list of mods when I gain the courage to throw my headlights in an oven.
@Saabarru: Yeah, I called the shop I am planning to take my car to get the tint done and they have red film they can use for the tails, just have to make sure it would match the taillights when applied.

3M makes a glue specifically for reattaching emblems/badges and trip pieces. I have had used it many times with great success.

Sounds interesting, any link so I can see how the glue package looks like? I am in a big need... washed my car today and the "r" fell off....
And when I was removing the adhesive "e" fell off... So I removed the a and the o .. so I could clean the paint better...
I can still read Ae o on the paint.. the r is gone.. If you are good with the car polisher then I don't think it will be any problems. I used my polisher but I am not so handy with it.. will post some pics I took just for this thread.

@Tribbe: Ya you can tell in the pictures most of what is left behind seems like it could be taken care of with a good polish/waxing instead of faded paint.

So over the weekend I pulled the trigger and debadged!!
Stoked at how it came out. Here's a couple pics of the various stages. As Tribbe said when you take them off you can still see the outlines of letters if you know what you're looking for because of built up dust, etc. Luckily my paint was in pretty good shape so it didn't seem to be a different color underneath.
Basically what I did was:
1. heat up emblem w/ hair dryer
2. peel of letters using fishing line between emblem and paint
3. remove adhesive carefully w/ fingernails
4. use bug & tar remover to get rid of stubborn adhesive
5. use 3M rubbing compound to get rid of remaining visible outline
6.
'Aer' w/ adhesive remaining, after removing letter o adhesive:
After bug & tar remover:
After rubbing compound:

Just did mine the other day, debadged and rebadged the Saab with Saabaru badges.
I LOL at the looks from Subaru drivers behind me at stop lights

For those who don't have fishing line around, dental floss will do the same job.
Offline
Far more likely to fray and or break. Fishing line is the way to go.

not when you double it over several times, everyone has dental floss (or should) but maybe not fishing line...
Just make sure to use un-waxed dental floss
