Just thought I'd check in and say hey to everyone in the Boulder area. I got here a couple of days ago; moving in to start my Masters in Aerospace Engineering at CU. I've seen a couple of 9-2x's so far, and a ton of WRX's...makes me feel at home already.

Welcome aboard! I work just down the road at NIST, and will be teaching a class in the Mech E department for the fall term, so might see you around the Engineering Center (look for the tall guy, goatee, walking with a cane, at least for now...)
Will be looking for a red 92x....not many of those around.

Two questions:
1) Are there any decent self-service car washes in town? I live in a townhouse development and don't have a hose to use to wash my car. My rims need a scrub down pretty bad right now. I haven't washed it since driving from Maine. Lots of grime.
2) Snow tires. Is that a no brainer around here? People say Boulder has very few days in the winter with snow actually on the road so you don't really need them, but I'm a skier and will hopefully be making at least one trip a week to the mountains (doing the Copper/Winterpark pass). My roommate says I should be fine since I have awd but he isn't really a car guy so I'm hesitant to take his word for it.

1) there are some, they are probably more expensive than you are used to because of the cost of water (we pay per month what we used to pay per quarter in MI). We go full serve, Puddles on 28th st, they do a good job, and the price is the same as full service was back east. There are a number of self serve places, the closest one to our place is on Lookout just north of Spine, near King Soopers. There is one on 28th (forget where, but north of Pearl) and I think there is one on Canyon, just before you head up Boulder Canyon). Don't bother with the gas station touchless washes.....they suck.
2) if you are going to do Berthoud pass regularly, (road to WP) you want snows with studs. I've got Firestone Winterforces on my car, and even when treated, that drive can be a butt clencher

With studs? Really? Do you think it would be dumb to go with no studs? I was thinking about getting a higher performance winter tire like Blizzak LM-60's. Studs weren't even on my radar...

Not really. Studs are only effective on ice; on mostly snowy roads, they actually inhibit grip to a certain degree.
Studless snows are the route to take.

Yup. And they also inhibit traction big time in the dry, or worse, in the rain. No traction.
But hey, if you want to go studded, I have a set of 4 used Altimax Artics that you can buy.

I've got a bead on a guy who will sell me 5 (one slightly bent) 06/07 WRX wheels for $300.
Good idea?
I think they'll look awesome, I'm just not sure if it's worth spending $300 to get the convenience of swapping wheels and leaving the tires on them. Thoughts?

I've got a set of those with my snows on them. The Saab center caps fit perfectly. Can't remember what I paid for them, though.
FWIW, the majority of the snow samurai that I know out here run studs. That's not to say that they have a good reason for doing it. I don't have 'em, and I've been fine in the city, but my couple trips over the pass in February have been exciting.

Generally, you'll be fine without studs. I've run snow-rated all seasons the last 5 years and have had no issues, including my trips up into the mountains (of course, that's coming from a Denverite; they do a decent job of keeping I70 clear). That said, since road debris blew one of the tires out at the end of last season, I'll be picking up new tires this winter- sadly, I doubt I'll be returning to Nokians purely based on the economics of expensive tires and unemployment looming.

Just tried out Puddles on 28th street. For $20, not a bad deal. They didn't do a great job on my rims but about 2 minutes with a few paper towels and I had them where I was happy. I'll probably go back there.

No need for studs, I run Hankook iPikes. they work really well, and are very fun on Berthoud Pass. I go over the pass 15 to 20 times in the winter to go to Winter Park. I run WRX rims with my winter tires.

FWIW, my Artic Altimax with studs did not seem traction challenged in the dry or wet and the extra assurance for ice was worth it. The worst part was the feeling that there was a dog walking on tile whereever I went.

Yeah! I saw the dirt jump park about a week ago; it's right next to the emissions testing facility. Looked awesome!
