Re: My new toy

Well, the bugeye is now flashed stage 2. Installed a brand new Cobb down pipe on it, next is to install a Cobb up pipe, not an easy job. I'll have a friend install the up pipe at his shop. A new clutch is going on it in a couple of weeks. Still debating on what to do about suspension, I'm liking the plush ride on the stock suspension. I may just keep stock springs and swaybars on it but change the struts. Despite the 177,000 miles of use on the struts they still work properly. I took the Cobb intake off, got tired of the noise it makes, going to sell it. Bugeye is coming along nicely.

Re: My new toy

I haven't posted pictures of my bugeye recently but I've done a few things that I'm super happy with and want to share. This is my dd now, the saabaru sits for the most part. Recently I replaced the head cover gaskets, oil cooler gasket and installed a new pcv as it was using/loosing a quart of oil every two weeks or so. The car now is just shy of 190,000 miles and burns absolutely no oil between 3,000 oil change intervals and been getting close to 30mpg highway. It is sitting on my take off stock saabaru struts and 05 STI take off sedan springs. The saabaru donated the o.z ultraleggeras and rubber too. As stated previously it is flashed stage 2 with an accessport, has a perrin turbo inlet and a cobb catted down pipe. Most recently added:
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/D-Rodman/DSCN2492.jpg
New bike rack and hitch.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/D-Rodman/DSCN2498.jpg
Bosal twin tip 3" catback, louder than the prodrive on the saabaru but love it anyway.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/D-Rodman/DSCN2493.jpg
Kenwood head unit for ipod/iphone, mb quart amp and alpine speakers, sound is stout, clean and clear, love it.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/D-Rodman/DSCN2494.jpg
A clean set of STI seats complete my recent upgrades.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i193/D-Rodman/DSCN2497.jpg
This what the dd looks like now, work in progress.
Sorry for the super low quality pictures, my camera really sucks, need a new one.

Re: My new toy

Well, today the bugeye gave the ghost, just made it to my parking lot at work, the engine sounding like an angry rattle snake or the castanuelas on a spanish flamenco dancer. It's sad, not sure how I'll go about fixing it yet but at the moment considering a brand new 2.0l long block. I'll do a new oil pump, complete timing belt kit, new turbo and injectors etc.

We have the exact same 2 cars with same colors lol.  Sad to see your bugeye bite the dust.

My bugeye has 202k on it and still going strong.  Love driving it.  The Saab just sits in my garage.  What did you do with your factory seats that were in the Subaru?  Ive been looking for a set to put in the Saab.

Re: My new toy

I placed an ad on my local Subaru forum and gave the seat for free to the first guy that said needed them. They were mint except a bit of wear on the left side bolster from getting in and out of the car. My bugeye may still be running too but it had been knocking a bit and I just beat on it relentlessly.

Well a new heart transplant is coming for my lucky bugeye, a JDM EJ207 version 8 is on the way. More details when the car is running again.

Awesome decision!  Def goign the rigth way on that  big_smile

Something I'd love to do, and at the same time don't want to have happen.  Way to make the most of it!

More details along the way...  please  cool.  Would love to hear about any issues that come up.

Engine is in, gotta finish the avcs wiring and extend the intermediate pipe, the jdm down pipe is shorter than the usdm.
I'm getting very excited to hear it run. I'm running the stock jdm ecu map till I get up to EFI  Logics for open souce tunning. Using a stock STI catback for now, spoke to stromung, looks like they are interested in building exhaust parts for the jdm engine swap people. They affered to help with my exhaust, so stoked.

Re: My new toy

The bugeye was at EFI Logics today getting it's tune after the engine swap, its a 2003 jdm ej207 ver 8 and ecu with working AVCS. All stock with the exception of a Tomei down pipe, borla hush catback, Perrin turbo inlet, walbro 255 fuel pump and ixiz concept ebcs. Here are the results, thanks EFI Logics, you guys are a great team, it was a pleasure doing business with you.

Re: My new toy

i like it  up

I may have missed it, but what octane was the tune @ and the turbo seems to spool earlier than what I have read for other version 8s; looks like your intake and exhaust are working in your favor.

I noticed the PLX AFR on the monitor, mind showcasing your gauge setup? I plan on running several PLX gauges hooked to my laptop to display them via dashcommand and running this skin

Re: My new toy

I had them tune for 93 oct since I don't plan on driving to the midwest, my 92x is tuned for 91 otc for those missouri trips I do. I just have a factory installed Lamco boost gauge that came with the car and recently installed an innovate wideband and gauge, nothing special nor elegant, just functional for now. The boost gauge sits on the stock location, on the steering column. The air/fuel gauge is on a single mount on the a pillar. I'd like to move both gauges to a SMY dual gauge clustermaker, eventually. The Ixiz concept ebcs is a strong contribuitor in that early boost buildup, I'm pleased with how it turned out, thanks.

I do like what you are brewing in your mind, can't wait to see your project shape up.

Yeah me neither, I'm starting to get to anxious and tempted to do the engine swap alone asap. Did keep the stock redline? I love how the power keeps building all the way to redline on these engines

Cool, I didn't know Ixiz concept made a EBCS (and now I noticed they also make phenolic spacers). Isn't ixiz a forum member here? Would you happen to know if he offers 9-2x members discounts by any chance?  biggrin

oh btw your rpf1's made your wagon look better  up

Re: My new toy

Thank you, I'm staying with rpf1's on this car. Yes, stock redline but no need to rev so high, it builds power so fast that 6500 - 7000 rpm shifting keeps it on boil.

How does it feel?  Make a stage II set up feel incredibly weak?  Enjoy!

Re: My new toy

I've been looking for some good resources on ej207 swap info, but it's difficult to weed out the good info from the bad. Can you post some links of the good info you've come across in your searching? No hurry for me, I am just thinking forward to that bittersweet day. I've heard that ej207 swaps are a nightmare to wire and deal with, but I have also heard that they are basically plug and play.

Re: My new toy

You have me wanting to attempt this by selling my perfectly fine motor. Think I could get 2k cash for a 65k mile motor?  Hmmmm

I need to look into emissions but iirc this is still a plug in OBDII set up and as LNG as the tuner does the right things ill be ok, correct?

Inspiring

Re: My new toy

Yes but you'd be runing your car on a Jdm ecu, may want look into how the inspection process works in your state. I still have my usdm ecu to use once a year for inspection. It's a simple ecu swap, no additional wiring required. Unplug the jdm ecu and plug in the usdm ecu. My usdm ecu map has been modified to not trigger the tgv related check engine light. It's just a matter of disabling the tgv monitors via open source. Next thing is to transfer the files from the tuned Jdm ecu to the usdm ecu. It's just to run the engine safe while on inspection mode.  I'll have no avcs function when runing on the usdm ecu.
That said, I wouldn't take my low miles well looked after original engine out of my car to install an unknown history junk yard engine, no way. It only becomes economicaly somewhat justifiable if you have a damaged engine and you need a long block to make do.
I understand why you like the idea and feel inspired but you need to make sure you fully understand what you are getting into. I plan on keeping my car for as long as I can foresee. My car is a toy, financial reasoning no longer applies. I still love my aero in its stage 2 state, plenty fun, reliable and fuel efficient. The ej207 is thirsty, I'll be monitoring my fuel consumption over the next couple of weeks and report back. I'm still enjoying the new power too much and not ready to go an entire week driving my regular week without standing hard on the gas pedal too much.

Re: My new toy

Indeed. All things I've thought about. Likely, I'm getting ahead of myself, since I already have a working motor, as you point out. This being my only car certainly makes me take pause as well.

Would be interested to hear you mpg results as the miles pile up. With my stage II I find the mileage varies drastically based on my right foot antics. Lows of 18s and highs of 27s.
