2013 Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Lots of Giant Pictures, 56K Death)

I went to the Monterey Motorsports Reunion this past weekend.  Here's the description from the website for the event:

Described as a museum springing to life, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is a cornerstone of the Monterey Peninsula’s Classic Car Week. Approximately 550 vehicles are accepted to compete in the world’s premier motoring event, based on the car’s authenticity, race provenance and period correctness.

I don't even know where to begin with documenting this.  It was one of the most surreal car-related experiences of my life.  The wealth that was around was totally over the top, the variety of cars was like nothing I've ever seen, and the racing was really fantastic...particularly given the rarity and value of the cars that were being raced.

Two things to keep in mind:

First, every single car in the races is the real deal.  No reproductions or anything like that are allowed (as far as I know), and they're crazy picky about what they do accept. And almost every single other car (to my knowledge) you see in the rest of the places is also the real deal.  No kit cars, no reproductions, no stuff made in people's basements.  There, of course, are exceptions: there were a few Kirkham cars, but they've kind of become their own thing, and there was the god awful hideous Corvette-based monstrosity, and I'm sure there were others.  Other than that, just about everything you see is the real thing.

Second, be sure to look in the background of photos and videos.  Almost every shot has multiple things to see.

We started Thursday at the Mecum Auction.  This is just like you see on Velocity (or Speed, or History, or whatever channel it's on).  A huge variety in cost of cars (from the ~$1,000 range up to the $4,000,000 range), lots of loud music, lots of neon lights.  Here were some of the cars up for sale:

A beautiful old car with sliding doors:

The actual car from Ferris Bueller's Day off:

This made me throw up in my mouth, it's something Corvette-based (this was a few hours into day 1, and I was already so overwhelmed with everything that I completely missed the two cars next to it, make note of them as well):

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-25WMX6iNjqc/UhNh3hBEflI/AAAAAAAAAIA/Aql1aYvZzTs/s0/20130815_101929.jpg

I didn't realize this picture came out so terribly at the time, but the tag is the important part anyway:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TMZc-gv_EP0/UhNiILgDzYI/AAAAAAAAAJU/gn3oe899-iY/s0/20130815_112502.jpg

Then we went and had lunch, and then we went for a test drive of some new Porsche's.  I had a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, a friend had the new Panamera GTS, some really really rich guys were driving the new 918. The 918 has a v8 that makes something like 600 horsepower, and two electric motors that make 280 horsepower.  It can run solely on the electrics, or it can run on both, which obviously means it's ridiculously fast.  The Carrera S I drove was pretty sweet.  Great power, very smooth, and it was surprisingly quiet with the top down.  Great exhaust burble on deceleration.  Paddle shifters, and the shifts were immediate.  We were somewhat in traffic, so I didn't get to really push it or anything.  I forgot to take a picture of what I drove, but I did see the infamous Magnus Walker in the parking lot immediately after he drove the 918:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-lZTvVhnxIqg/UhPwKTqHjFI/AAAAAAAAAQU/pPIcViDdJ6E/s0/20130815_175402.jpg

I kid you not, the Porsche salesman thought it was Rob Zombie.   biggrin

At this point, the weekend became a blur of auctions, car shows, going to the track, going to bars, going back to auctions, walking around downtown, on and on.  The sequence of events is kind of a blur.  So here's just a bunch of photos.

The Quail Motorsports Gathering:

Brand new BMW M4 (yes, M4):

How many bad ass cars are in this shot?  And anyone want to guess which three Ferraris are under wraps?

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-z4HjV-hdvjI/UhNhOCdWtaI/AAAAAAAAAFo/uXgi0HBFe5g/s0/20130815_175029.jpg

Anyone want to take a stab at identifying these lovely cars?

Remember the three Ferraris under wraps a few pictures back?  One was an F40, one was an F50 GT:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Cd4B4e4IYFo/UhNg0PcKoQI/AAAAAAAAAEA/izmEI5Lpxjw/s0/20130816_172908.jpg

And the third under wraps was the Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione:

(Also shown in that video is the Toyota Eagle MkIII GTP, renowned for its downforce, as my friend is pointing out.)

The Audi R18 and an S7:

Hey look, it's a pair of MP4-12c's waiting in traffic, and a bunch of Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Porsches just sitting around (I had a few drinks at this point and was having a difficult time staying focused on any one car, be sure to make use of the pause button so you can see everything in these shots):

This putting green was begging to have donuts done on it:

And why not have an actual Ferrari F1 in the mix?

Off for some drinks at Bonham's auction house:

This beautiful car had already been auctioned and was just sitting out back:

Maserati Tipo 61 (known as the birdcage due to its crazy frame, there's a model in the plexi container):

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7HLSeOR8Cwg/UhNi8ho9vwI/AAAAAAAAANI/Y1Hck41pr5c/s0/20130815_202057.jpg

We couldn't make it into the auction house in time for one of the most expensive cars of the night, but you can hear the audio in the background:

And we missed this as well, but apparently they auctioned off the most valuable road car that's ever been sold at auction:

http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=1060853

We did catch some high rollers inside the auction bidding on a Lister Jaguar and a Ferrari I didn't catch the name of:

Some stuff from the track:

F1 cars with panels removed look like hairy dogs that have recently been shaved:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KQJtbGXmWrY/UhNibydElrI/AAAAAAAAAKs/2-Tz_uQIr8Q/s0/20130817_114352.jpg

And the wheels from that car have negative infinity offset (and note the inboard brakes):

This ~$30,000,000 hooptie was just sitting out in the open:

And one of my favorite shots of the weekend, look at the mustache on this awesome ol' coot:

Tons of videos of racing are up on this channel I made, I'm getting tired of typing stuff: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3xcwaT6BYZ4rCnXXiWt5SQ

You'll have to forgive the poor quality of the recordings, it ain't my strong suit.  And the memory card on my camera was acting up, so I lost a bunch of photos and videos, and I think it was making the videos I did record a bit choppier than they should be. sad

And here are more photos: https://picasaweb.google.com/111518072726153261507

Anyway, it was an awesome weekend, I can't wait for next year.  Hope you enjoy the photos.  embeer

Re: 2013 Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Lots of Giant Pictures, 56K Death)

Looks Awesome:

I'll likely see some of those (older) cars at the Watkins Glen Vintage Grand Prix first weekend in Sept.

Having made the rounds of the vintage circuit a number of times:

Some missing IDs

Variety of race cars - first two are IMSA GTP era; Bob Tullius' Group 44 Jaguar XJR7, Buick GTP, orange is a McLaren from the CanAm era,
I grew up during the IMSA era, still love it.  Sort of surprised to see no Porsche 962's or 917's in your photos.

Sliding Door car (white, only color I've ever seen, could be the same car AFAIK) late '50's Kaiser Darrien

Above the Maser Birdcage - aqua green (bleah) Austin Healy - not sure if its a full 3000 (six) or whatever the 4cyl model was called

1995.5 Audi //S6, Black/Ecru; MRC Stage 2, Eibach/Bilstein, RS2 BBK, HID's, Eurotails
2005 Saab 9-2X Aero Satin Grey; Cobb STX tune/Cobb 25 mm FSB, 22mm solid adj RSB/H6 upgrade/Noltec Camber Plates/STI Pinks, Koni Inserts/Whiteline Rear Stress Bar/Izixhood/Stromung DP, Crucial HF Kitty, STi catback, Hella MicroDE fogs, color keyed/polished roof rails.

Re: 2013 Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Lots of Giant Pictures, 56K Death)

Awesome, thanks. up

I went into the weekend thinking the F1 cars would be my favorite, but the IMSA cars took the cake.  Everyone should watch this video at least through the 2 or 3 minute mark so you can hear the crazy BOV noises and rev limiter noises and backfires and everything (and scargo, keep an eye out for the Porsches you're looking for...some are in there):

Completely understandable to mistake them, unless you work for Porsche.  I'm not into the cars at all, and I've heard of him.  Great little documentary about him here :

You should watch it....I bet you'd like it.

Re: 2013 Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Lots of Giant Pictures, 56K Death)

Thank you so much, Kornfeld.

I was in front of the tube watching the Mecom auction, and saw some of those go across the block, including the Bueller car (i'd always thought it was a real Ferrari)

The McLaren behind the IMSA cars is the M8F, though it could also be an M20, the cars that got their hats handed to them by the panzer Porsche 917/10 and 917/30s.

The #46 Datsun behind the Ferrari is a Trans Am car from Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE), very successful in under 2.5L.   Pete Brock was one of the designers of the C2 Chevrolet Corvette and did racing development on it as well.

The lovely cars with numbers 65, 54 and 13 look like Shelby Cobra Daytona coupes used for endurance racing in the early 60s.  The number 8 in the background with the guy looking at it appears to be another BRE Datsun, this time a 510

If authentic, the orange McLaren #3 outside the RM auction is the 1974 Indy winner with Johnny Rutherford at the helm

I've seen most of the F1 cars run at the Brian Redman Challenge vintage weekend at Road America.  Same with the Can Am and IMSA cars.  There is nothing, and I mean nothing, on earth like standing at the start finish line at RA with a  fleet of 600+ cubic inch 60s Can Am cars at full chat storming up that hill.  The ground literally shakes.

Off to the picasa folder (and to figure out why this computer won't play youtube.....

Races: easy.  Just buy tickets.

Auctions: variable.  Mecum you drive in and park and go to the auction for free.  RM, you pay ~$300 a head just to walk in the door...or you find a friend of a friend with passes, and start smuggling them back and forth until everyone is inside.  Bonham's: walk in.  I never went to Russo and Steele (or whatever it's called) so I don't know.

The Quail Car show: it's several hundred for tickets,  or wait for it to end, then walk right in.  Every car is still there.  This was where the cars were abandoned on the side of the road.

Then on Sunday, there is a huge show at the Pebble Beach golf course.  This is ~$250 a head as well, and very hoidy-toidy, but you can see cars that are being publicly unveiled for the first time.  I skipped this so can't speak about it from personal experience.

Holy cow, almost forgot to mention: apparently Michael Schumacher was driving one of the cars in a race.  I'll have to dig around and see if I've got footage...or if I was given bad info. biggrin

Re: 2013 Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Lots of Giant Pictures, 56K Death)

Two F1 cars got mixed up and one flipped during their final race, and I finally found a video of it:

arrow-up that was the slowest flying yellow I've ever seen by a corner worker.

Still, if anyone doesn't feel Vintage Racers don't really try (although both of those guys will likely be banned from driving for one year by SVRA rules), here's a bit of proof otherwise.

Agreed.

Crazy his helmet hits the ground, and he puts his arms up to stop himself (obviously reflexively).  I like modern safety features.

Many of the trans am cars didn't even have head rests on the seats, just so that the cars are all period correct.  Stupidity like this completely baffles me.

Point 1: He tried that move going into the corkscrew?   eek

Point 2: I would hope that they had the yellow waving at the previous station, by the time they get to that flag station, it's too late.

Point 3:  Thats going to cost a wee bit o' green to fix.
